Fractured Worlds: What Science Fiction Can Teach Us About Our Deepest Divisions


What if the greatest threat to a civilization wasn’t that one side was wrong—but that both sides were only half right?


That question lies at the heart of Kiri: Fractured World, a new science fiction book I just released.

Set on the ocean planet Thaloria, the novel follows two civilizations struggling to survive as their living world undergoes a once-in-two-thousand-year transformation. On the surface, it is a story of rising seas, failing ecosystems, political tension, and ancient mysteries. Beneath that adventure, however, lies a more fundamental question.

Why do societies become trapped in conflicts where every side possesses genuine wisdom, yet none can see beyond the limits of its own perspective?

Although the story unfolds on an alien world, it was inspired by patterns I have witnessed throughout my career as a marine biologist and, more recently, as a science fiction writer. Again and again, I have seen people who care deeply about the future reach completely different conclusions about how to protect it. Scientists and Indigenous communities. Engineers and ecologists. Technologists and conservationists. Each often recognizes something essential, yet conversations too easily become contests over who possesses the whole truth.

Fractured World asks a different question. What if these opposing viewpoints are not enemies at all, but complementary expressions of something larger?

That possibility forms one of the philosophical foundations of the novel. It is inspired by Arthur Koestler’s concept of the holon, in which everything is simultaneously a whole in itself and part of a larger whole, together with Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, which suggests that individuals and societies evolve by learning to include increasingly broader perspectives rather than replacing one with another. These ideas do not provide the novel’s answers. They provide the questions that drive it.


Two Civilizations, One Forgotten Inheritance


The central conflict in Fractured World unfolds between two cultures that have shared the same planet for centuries. The Thalori inhabit a dynamic ocean world of seven volcanic archipelagos, where relentless tides, powerful storms, and ever-shifting currents have shaped an amphibious civilization that survives by balancing engineering, ecological knowledge, and cooperation across thousands of islands.

The Holdfasts are engineers, builders, navigators, and planners. They construct resilient harbors, manage trade routes, stabilize dangerous Tideways, and develop sophisticated systems for predicting storms and coordinating society across thousands of islands. Their philosophy values structure, reliability, and long-term planning. In an unpredictable world, they believe civilization survives because people work together through institutions capable of protecting everyone.

Without the Holdfasts, Thaloria’s cities would collapse. Trade between distant archipelagos would fail. Food shortages would spread, and millions would lose the infrastructure that allows civilization to function.

The Weave approaches the same world from a very different direction. Rather than attempting to control nature, they learn to participate within it. Living among reefs and kelp forests, they cultivate an intimate understanding of ecological relationships, seasonal rhythms, animal migrations, and the subtle feedbacks that sustain the living ocean. Their settlements are designed to adapt with changing conditions rather than resist them. Their wisdom comes less from prediction than from careful observation and continuous relationship with the ecosystems surrounding them.

Without the Weave, the reefs that sustain Thaloria gradually decline. The biological relationships upon which every civilization ultimately depends begin to unravel. The planet continues to change, but people lose the ability to recognize what those changes mean.

Neither society is wrong.

Each evolved because it solved real problems. Each preserved knowledge essential for survival. Yet over centuries, each gradually came to believe that its own way of seeing represented the whole truth. What had once been complementary became ideological. Identity replaced relationship. Cooperation gave way to distrust.

Long before the novel begins, both societies have forgotten that they descend from a single civilization whose people understood that engineering and ecology were never meant to stand apart. The ancient Selkai served as keepers of that integration, moving naturally between structure and living systems because they understood that each depended upon the other. Their inheritance survives only in fragments—songs, symbols, engineering records, and myths whose original meaning has been lost.

The tragedy of Thaloria is therefore not simply political or environmental. It is a civilization that has forgotten its own wholeness.


A Mirror of Our Own World


Although Thaloria is fictional, its central tension reflects conversations taking place across our own planet.

Consider the challenge of responding to climate change. One perspective emphasizes technological innovation. Renewable energy, improved engineering, carbon capture, electrification, advanced agriculture, and better infrastructure all represent humanity’s remarkable capacity to solve problems through science and coordinated action. These are profoundly important achievements. Without them, it is difficult to imagine sustaining eight billion people while reducing our impact on the planet.

Yet another perspective emphasizes something equally valuable: Indigenous ecological knowledge, traditional stewardship, local observation, and generations of lived experience within particular landscapes. These traditions remind us that ecosystems are not simply resources to be managed. They are living relationships developed over tens of thousands of years through careful attention, reciprocity, and humility.

Too often these perspectives are portrayed as competing alternatives.

  • Technology or tradition.
  • Innovation or conservation.
  • Science or Indigenous knowledge.

The reality is far more interesting. Technology without ecological understanding can unintentionally create new problems while solving old ones. Large-scale engineering projects sometimes overlook the complex relationships that sustain healthy ecosystems. At the same time, ecological wisdom alone may struggle to address global challenges requiring coordinated infrastructure, international cooperation, and technological innovation.

The future almost certainly requires both.

This is precisely the realization that slowly emerges within Fractured World. Neither the Holdfasts nor the Weave can solve Thaloria’s crisis alone because the crisis itself arises from a separation between ways of understanding that were never meant to exist independently.


Seeing the Whole Through the Holon


Arthur Koestler offered a simple but powerful idea that helps explain why societies so often become divided. He proposed that everything in nature is a holon—something that is simultaneously a complete whole in itself and part of a larger whole. A cell is a complete living unit, yet it also belongs to a tissue. A tissue forms part of an organ, and an organ contributes to the functioning of an entire organism. Each level retains its identity while gaining meaning through its relationships with the larger system.

Human societies work in much the same way. Individuals belong to families, families to communities, communities to nations, and nations to a global civilization connected by shared ecosystems, economies, and technologies. Healthy societies recognize these nested relationships, balancing the needs of each level without losing sight of the whole.

This idea lies at the heart of Fractured World. The Holdfasts and the Weave are each complete cultures with their own strengths and values, but they are also complementary parts of a larger civilization. Their tragedy begins when each mistakes its own perspective for the whole truth and forgets that it depends upon the other. Once that larger relationship is lost, disagreements become struggles over identity rather than opportunities for understanding. The conflict is no longer about solving shared problems—it becomes about defending competing worldviews.


Ken Wilber and the Value of Partial Truths


Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory builds on this idea by suggesting that different cultures and individuals develop different worldviews because they adapt to different challenges. Each perspective preserves important truths while also having blind spots. Conflict arises not because one side is entirely wrong, but because each mistakes its partial truth for the whole. Growth comes not by defeating other perspectives, but by transcending and including them—creating a broader understanding that preserves the strengths of each.

This idea forms one of the philosophical foundations of Fractured World. The Holdfasts embody structure, engineering, and coordinated action, while the Weave preserves ecological awareness, adaptation, and relationship with living systems. Neither is complete on its own. The ancient Selkai understood that civilization required both ways of knowing working together. The novel is ultimately about rediscovering that forgotten inheritance and recognizing that lasting resilience emerges when seemingly opposing perspectives are reunited into a larger whole.


Beyond Thaloria


The pattern explored in Fractured World extends far beyond environmental issues. Many of today’s most persistent debates share a similar structure: science and spirituality, economic growth and environmental protection, tradition and innovation, efficiency and resilience. These are often framed as either-or choices, when they may be better understood as complementary perspectives addressing different aspects of the same complex reality.

This does not mean every idea is equally valid—evidence matters, and harmful beliefs should be challenged. But many enduring conflicts persist because each side recognizes genuine truths while overlooking the insights held by the other.

When we recognize that possibility, the conversation shifts. Instead of asking, Who is right? we begin asking, What important truth might I be missing?


Bridging Our Differences


If Fractured World offers a practical lesson, it is that meaningful dialogue begins with curiosity rather than certainty. Instead of asking, How do I prove this person wrong? we might first ask, What problem are they trying to solve? People with deeply opposing views often share common values—security, community, justice, responsibility, or concern for future generations—even when they propose very different solutions.

Distinguishing between positions and the values that underlie them can transform disagreement into understanding. Positions are the specific answers people advocate. Values are the deeper concerns those answers attempt to protect. Conversations become far more productive when we explore the values beneath the positions.

When we encounter someone who sees the world very differently, our first instinct is often to identify the flaws in their argument. A more useful question might be:

What problem is this person trying to solve?

People who disagree profoundly may nevertheless be protecting many of the same underlying values but their proposed solutions differ because they understand the system through different experiences.

The novel also suggests the importance of intellectual humility. Every perspective, including our own, has blind spots. Rather than trying to defeat another worldview, we can ask what it sees that ours does not. This does not require abandoning evidence or conviction; it simply acknowledges that complex problems rarely yield to a single way of thinking. Like the Holdfasts and the Weave, we become more resilient when we recognize that our greatest strengths often emerge not from defending our own perspective, but from integrating it with the complementary insights of others.

Finally, we can remember the larger system. Whether we are talking about families, organizations, scientific disciplines, or nations, healthy systems endure because the relationships among their parts remain healthy. When those relationships fracture, everyone eventually bears the cost.


A Civilization Remains Whole


At its heart, Fractured World is not about engineering versus ecology, science versus tradition, or technology versus nature. It is about fragmentation itself.

The greatest danger facing Thaloria is not the environmental transformation unfolding around it. The planet is adapting. Life is reorganizing. The deeper crisis lies within the civilization that has forgotten how to adapt with it.

The same question may be worth asking of ourselves.

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, our challenges also become increasingly systemic. Climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, technological disruption, and social polarization do not respect the boundaries between disciplines or ideologies. They ask us to think more broadly than ever before.

Perhaps that is the real message behind Fractured World.

A civilization remains whole not because everyone thinks alike, but because it preserves the relationships that allow different ways of knowing to strengthen one another. Like the Holdfasts and the Weave, we may discover that the perspectives we most often oppose are not obstacles to understanding the world more completely.

They may be the missing half of our own.
